At the AFDO Conference June 18-23, 2010 in Norfolk, VA at the Wiley Award banquet Dr. Ernest Julian, RI Dept of Health, was the recipient of the most honored and prestigious award that the Association of Food and Drug Officials presents to an individual, The Harvey W. Wiley Award. This award is presented to an individual for exceptional service to the state and to the nation in performance of duties and responsibilities in the administration, and enforcement of food, drug, and consumer protection. Congratulations Ernie for receiving this very special award, I can’t think of anyone more deserving than you.

With Ernie receiving this award this year, it marks an unprecedented 4 out of the last 5 Harvey W. Wiley Award recipients were from NEFDOA, Terry Macaig 2006, Gene Blake 2007, Al Bugenhagen 2009, and now Ernie in 2010.

It must be also mentioned that NEFDOA has had some winners from years past, Fred Siino 1982, Irving Bell 1984, Eaton E. Smith 1986, Mary Heslin 1991, and Joe Corby 2001. Not bad coming from the smallest AFDO Affiliate, we must be doing something right.

At the NEFDOA Conference May 11-14, 2010 in Halifax, NS, Canada at the Thursday night Awards Banquet, John Marzilli, District Director, New England District Office of USFDA, was this year’s recipient of the prestigious Eaton E. Smith Award. This award couldn’t have gone to a more deserving individual. Congratulations John, a job well done.

John retired this year in June after serving 39 extraordinary years with FDA and will truly be missed. John is now moving on to volunteer in Jamaica and other areas around the world for the Missionaries of the Poor which has been John’s dream for a long time and we wish him all the best.
